National Philoptochos Talking to Children About Violent Events

Press Release from Paulette Geanacopoulos, LMSW Director, Department of Social Services, National Philoptochos

Talking to Children about Violent Events

Many inquiries have been received from chapters and individuals asking if we have literature that offers suggested ways to speak to children about the war in Ukraine – similar to what we had distributed a few years ago following the school shootings, entitled, “Talking to Your Children About Violent Events”.

As a service to our membership and to accommodate these requests, I found two appropriate documents, both of which provide recommendations for different age groups. One, entitled, “8 Questions Kids Are Asking About War And How To Answer Them” was posted on the HuffPost website just a few days ago. The other is a fact sheet from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, entitled, “Talking To Children About War”. I have attached both for your information. I also have also attached our original document about speaking to children about violent events.

We hope you will be willing and able to distribute and/or post one or more of these documents within your parishes.

If you have any questions, please email me at PauletteG@philoptochos.org
